Changing What you See

Hello, all you quilters out there!

I have a question for you—when you look at a quilt pattern that you want to make, do you intend to make it as closely as you can to the photo provided? Or are you open to changing it, from changing colors and fabrics to changing the block size to make the quilt larger or smaller? When we make samples for the shop, we usually try to be faithful to the pattern as depicted so that you, the customer, will be able to see the quilt that the designer made. Recently, however, we are starting to be more adventurous or creative or inspired, you make the call.

Here is the little quilt that has made quite a journey, coming in pieces from Texas to California, on vacation with me. It is called Uniform Blues and it is a little Civil War reproduction quilt based on the pattern by Carol Hopkins. I intended to make mine look very much like the photo but you can see that I went on my own way with it.

Here is Carol Hopkins' quilt from her pattern, Uniform Blues . I was much happier with it when I added the red fabrics.

If you want to see more changes than that, consider this example. One of our talented assistants in the shop, Amy Johnson, decided to make one of the Carol Hopkins designs that none of us had wanted to try. I was simply amazed at how she completely changed the look of the quilt. Consider also the Poppy Ladies pattern and our version by Sonja Kraus. Look at our quilts as shown in the booth photo, Fields of Valor on the left and Poppy Ladies on the right:

Then look at the original quilts by designer Carol Hopkins.

What do you think? Do you like our changes? Do you like the designs? You can find them on our web site under Civil War Legacies . We have made almost all of these and they look great!
